My Big Fat Greek Wedding Sequel Confirmed by Writer Nia Vardalos
Loved the movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding? Well you are in luck, because more than 10 years after the original, a sequel is in the works.
Nia Vardalos took to twitter to share the news of bringing another big fat Greek wedding to the screen. "I'm working on a MBFGWedding sequel," she wrote. "Now that I'm experiencing motherhood I feel ready to write this next chapter."
"A few jaded press corps will claim I ran out of money and just want to kiss John Corbett again," Vardalos wrote on Twitter. "One of these things is true."
The sequel centers on "the lovably loud Portokalos family who return after a family secret is revealed and a bigger, fatter wedding brings the big fat Greek family back together again."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Vardalos has written the script for the project and will reprise the role of Toula Portokalos, a first-generation Greek-American woman. Corbett will play the non-Greek who fell in love with her in the original. The plot involves the reveal of a family secret and a new wedding which brings the Greek clan back together again (the wedding is described as "bigger and fatter").
The original, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, was made on a $5 million budget and grossed an astounding $369 million worldwide at the box office. The 2002 romantic comedy made Vardalos a major star, earned her an Oscar nomination for screenwriting. The team producing the film will again include Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks, along with Gary Goetzman. No director has been officially named yet.
Vardalos is currently on a book tour for her best-seller Instant Mom.
