Renowned Christian artist Michael W. Smith is mourning the loss of his longtime bandmate and friend Chris Leidhecker, who passed away after battling an aggressive form of cancer.

Smith shared the heartbreaking news in a tribute honoring Leidhecker's life, musicianship, and faith. According to Smith, Leidhecker had been a vital member of his touring band, helping shape the musical foundation that supported worship concerts around the world.

"Chris is the backbone of the band," Smith wrote. "Laying down the rhythms that brought worship to a different spot."

The two musicians first connected in 2017 when Smith was making changes to his band lineup. During a lunch meeting, Smith says he immediately recognized Leidhecker's extraordinary talent and character.

"At the time he was only 27 years old and was one of the most talented people I had ever met," Smith recalled. "Whether it was playing jazz at a club in East Nashville, working on a symphony, or killing it on a rock song, he could do anything."

Beyond his musical gifts, Smith remembered Leidhecker as a devoted husband to his wife Corrine and someone whose adventurous spirit led him to travel the world while sharing worship through music.

Smith also reflected on the drummer's remarkable strength during his battle with cancer, describing his positivity throughout the illness as inspiring to everyone around him.

"Chris went home to Jesus yesterday after a bout with an aggressive cancer," Smith shared. "His strength and positivity during the season he walked through was unbelievable."

The loss has left Smith and his team grieving deeply, though their faith provides hope in the midst of sorrow.

"We are all a bit lost today-even while knowing that we will see our friend again," Smith wrote. "The thought doesn't dull the mourning."

In his tribute, Smith pointed to the song "Welcome Home," which he wrote in 2010 with Kyle Lee and Michael Farren, as capturing how he feels in this moment. The song reflects the Christian hope of eternal life and reunion with loved ones in heaven.

Smith concluded his message by asking supporters and the Christian community to pray for Leidhecker's family, particularly his wife Corrine, during this time of profound grief.

"We love you, Chris. We will miss you until the day we see you on the other side," Smith wrote. "Please lift up Chris's family as they walk the unimaginable."

The Christian music community has begun sharing tributes and prayers for the Leidhecker family, honoring the life of a gifted musician whose rhythms helped carry worship across stages around the world.
