Samsung Galaxy S5 latest news: Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime, also known as the Samsung Galaxy Alpha, is the brand's answer to iPhone 6

After leaked photos and rumored product specs have surfaced all over the web, Korean brand Samsung has confirmed the release of the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime, also known as the Samsung Galaxy Alpha.

From the outside, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime veers away from the traditional look of the Galaxy series and has metallic chamfered edges, rivaling the look and feel of the iPhone. The phone, in fact, is said to be Samsung's answer to the iPhone 6.

In a statement, Samsung CEO JK Shin said, "The Galaxy Alpha was built and designed based on the specific desires of the consumer market."

"With an entirely new appearance, the Galaxy Alpha focuses on both beauty and functionality combining a stunning metal frame and slim, light weight design with the same powerful hardware and features users expect from a flagship Galaxy mobile device."

The Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime has a 4.7in screen with a 720p HD resolution, as against the Samsung Galaxy S5, which is rated Full HD 1080p.

The Samsung galaxy S5 Prime runs on octa-core processors (Quad 1.8 GHz and Quad 1.3 GHz) with 2GB of RAM. The phone is equipped with 32GB of internal storage but interestingly, no microSD card slot.

Other specs include an Android 4.4.4 (KitKat) OS, 12MP rear and 2.1MP front cameras, UHD 4K (3840x2160) video capabilities, NFC sensors, and a 1,860 mAh battery.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime release date is set for the beginning of September 2014.
