A few days after the quiet release of "The Author" and the "Hope" remix, new details have emerged about how Brandon Lake and Nick Jonas first connected-shedding light on the creative process behind one of the most unexpected faith-centered collaborations of the year.
In a recent interview with K-LOVE, Nick Jonas shared that the collaboration began through mutual connections who invited him to a songwriting camp. At the time, Jonas was in the middle of touring with the Jonas Brothers but found a short window that made the session possible.
"We had some mutual friends... and I got a text about a songwriting camp," Jonas explained. "We were in the middle of our tour... but I had a two or three day stretch where I had the window to do it. So I showed up and we got right into it-and I felt a real connection right away."
According to Jonas, that connection wasn't just creative but also rooted in shared musical instincts. What started as a simple idea quickly evolved into something more meaningful. "This idea... stemmed out of just a title at first," he said, referring to "The Author." "Then we came in with the chorus and kind of set up the whole bigger idea."
Brandon Lake also revealed that the rollout of the song was intentionally unconventional. Instead of announcing the collaboration upfront, the artists chose to release it quietly and observe how listeners would respond.
"We dropped it on secret," Lake said. "Just to see who's found it without us saying anything... which I've never done. That was kind of really fun."
That strategy appeared to spark organic buzz, with fans even bringing signs to Lake's concerts asking about a possible collaboration with Jonas-something Lake admitted he tried not to confirm too early.
Beyond the creative process, Lake emphasized the deeper spiritual message behind "The Author," noting that the song reflects personal questions he continues to wrestle with despite his platform.
"I think people assume we don't ask the same questions... but we absolutely do," Lake shared. "I'm getting up on that platform really dependent and asking, 'Who am I?' But also... who am I to question the pen in the hand of the Author?"
He continued by pointing to a central faith theme that anchors the song: trust. "If He's called us... why would we doubt? Even if we fail, don't we trust Him enough to turn that into something beautiful?"
The interview offers a clearer picture of how "The Author" became more than just a collaboration-it's a reflection of shared vulnerability, creative alignment, and a message grounded in surrender and purpose.
As the song continues to gain traction, its origin story only adds to its resonance, reminding listeners that even those on the biggest stages are still asking life's biggest questions-and placing their trust in something greater.
