Cristiano Ronaldo, Manuel Neuer, Arjen Robben Shortlisted For UEFA Best Player In Europe
Portuguese national captain and Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, Dutch winger Arjen Robben and World Cup winning German team's goalie Manuel Neuer have been shortlisted are the top nominees for the UEFA's Best Player in Europe Award for 2013-14.
According to the Spanish newspaper AS, despite Robben and Neuer's presence in the UEFA shortlist Ronaldo is thought to be favorite for the coveted honor. Last year, Frank Ribery won the honor.
Although 29-year-old Ronaldo failed to live up to the fans' expectations at the recently concluded FIFA 2014 World Cup in Brazil, he has certainly outshone his illustrious competitors, including Lionel Messi of Argentina and Neymar of Brazil, by successfully spearheading his club in the victory against Sevilla in the Super Cup earlier this week.
Ronaldo also played a vital role in Real's winning the Champions League and Copa del Rey.
According to UEFA, the winner will be declared in Monaco on Aug. 28. Currently, the draw for the group stage of the Champions League is taking place in Monaco. The winner will be decided by a jury comprising journalists from all the 54 member associations of UEFA.
While Neuer and Robben are from the Bayern Munich, which won the domestic league as well as the cup double in Germany last season. Neuer displayed an outstanding performance in the recently concluded 2014 FIFA World Cup, while Robben, who played for the Netherlands, impressed the fans in Brazil and worldwide.
Meanwhile, recent reports say that Ronaldo is contemplating to move to Manchester United after having played for Real Madrid since 2007. He has grown into a legend in Real Madrid and the architect of many of their wins.
