Each year, BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.) gathers Nashville's Christian music community for one of the genre's most meaningful behind-the-scenes celebrations: the BMI Christian Awards. Unlike televised award shows built around artist performances, this invitation-only ceremony exists to honor a different group entirely - the songwriters and publishers behind the songs congregations sing and fans stream every day.

Held annually at BMI's Music Row office in Nashville, the ceremony recognizes the 25 most-performed Christian songs on radio and television from the previous year, based on BMI's performance data. From that list, three top honors are awarded: Christian Song of the Year, Christian Songwriter of the Year, and Christian Publisher of the Year, the latter determined by which publishing company holds the highest percentage of copyright ownership among the year's award-winning songs.

The awards trace back nearly two decades, and the list of past Songwriter of the Year honorees reads like a who's-who of Christian music's most enduring voices - Casting Crowns' Mark Hall, tobyMac, Ethan Hulse, and Phil Wickham among them. In recent years, songwriter Jeff Pardo has become one of the ceremony's most decorated names, winning the top honor in both 2023 and 2025.

Beyond the top three awards, BMI also periodically presents a Spotlight Award, recognizing individuals whose broader influence has shaped the Christian and Gospel music industry - past honorees include Dottie Leonard Miller and Jackie Patillo.

What sets the BMI Christian Awards apart is its intimacy. Rather than a broadcast spectacle, it's a room full of the genre's actual songwriters, often followed by stripped-down live performances of the winning songs themselves - a fitting format for an industry built on lyrics meant to point beyond the artist to something greater. As BMI's Leslie Roberts put it in announcing this year's ceremony, these are the songwriters who "craft the soundtracks to people's lives and spiritual journeys."

For an industry niche often overshadowed by bigger, flashier award shows, the BMI Christian Awards remain a quiet but vital reminder of who's actually behind the songs shaping the modern worship and Christian music landscape.
