Just when it seemed Steven Lawson might be stepping back into the public ministry spotlight, the comeback talk came to an abrupt end.
The former Trinity Bible Church pastor briefly appeared as a featured speaker for the upcoming Contending for the Faith pastors conference, prompting speculation that the once-prominent expositor was preparing for his first major public ministry appearance since his 2024 moral failure. But within hours, Lawson's name disappeared from the event's website.
According to reports, the listing was the result of an internal misunderstanding rather than a planned return. Conference organizers had invited Lawson to speak but mistakenly promoted him before receiving his response. When Lawson learned his name had been advertised, he informed organizers that he was declining the invitation, and they promptly removed him from the lineup.
The conference, themed "Be Ye Steadfast," had even assigned Lawson two teaching sessions on sermon preparation before the error was corrected.
Lawson's ministry career unraveled in September 2024 after Trinity Bible Church indefinitely removed him from ministry following revelations of an inappropriate relationship with a woman several decades younger than him. Months later, Lawson publicly confessed his sin, expressing deep remorse and acknowledging that he had sinned against God, his wife, his family, and countless others who had trusted his ministry.
The fallout was swift. Lawson lost his roles as lead preacher at Trinity Bible Church, professor and dean at The Master's Seminary, and president of OnePassion Ministries. Since then, he has maintained a low public profile, with many within evangelical circles wondering whether-or if-he would ever return to public ministry.
For now, that return remains firmly on hold. Whether Lawson will eventually re-emerge in a public ministry role remains one of the biggest unanswered questions in evangelical leadership circles.
