Britney Spears is opening up about faith, family, and the years she says the conservatorship took from her - in one of the most personal statements she's shared publicly.
The pop star, 44, posted a lengthy essay on X Friday, sharing an old photo of her sons Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19, as young boys running along a beach. "Those two little bodies came out of my belly... Yes, they are mine," she wrote, before revealing she only learned five years ago that her parents, Jamie and Lynne Spears, had secretly taken her sons to the beach that summer without telling her.
Spears described a recent conversation with one of her sons, who told her his outlook on life was "all science" and that he did not personally believe in God. "In that moment I believed I had failed as a mother," she wrote, "because I know there is a Holy Spirit that sits high in the kingdom of heaven. I've been there I've felt it."
Rather than staying in that place of self-blame, Spears leaned into her own faith for strength, writing, "I've cried so much. I'm extremely weak, but through weakness they say you will find the most strength because you surrender and give it to God."
She went on to apologize directly to her children: "I wanna tell my kids and people in general that I'm sorry for my mistakes in the past." She added that she simply wanted to offer perspective, saying she has "been misunderstood" throughout much of her life.
Spears' father placed her under a court-ordered conservatorship in 2008 following a public breakdown the year prior. The arrangement lasted nearly 14 years, fueled by the #FreeBritney movement, before a judge terminated it in November 2021.
Nearly five years removed from that chapter, Spears' words suggest a woman still working through what was lost - and still holding onto the faith that carried her through it.
