Even Steven Curtis Chapman can apparently be stumped by a Steven Curtis Chapman song.
The Christian music legend has been revisiting his landmark Speechless album on the road, and he recently revealed that one track proved surprisingly difficult to bring back to life more than two decades later.
"Next 5 Minutes," which appears on Speechless, required Chapman to essentially relearn some of his own guitar work - leaving him wondering what his younger self had been thinking when he wrote it.
Chapman joked that the song was "a bit of a challenge to 'relearn,'" adding: "What was I thinkin' when I came up with this guitar part??"
But there's a sweet full-circle twist.
Chapman is performing the song alongside longtime friend Randy Pierce, one of his favorite guitarists and the musician who played electric guitar on the original Speechless recording and tour.
That reunion has transformed a tricky trip down musical memory lane into one of Chapman's favorite moments of the anniversary shows.
"Getting to perform it every night with my pal Randy Pierce ... has made it one of the most special moments of the tour," Chapman shared.
"Next 5 Minutes" remains part of the original Speechless track listing alongside fan favorites including "Dive," "The Change," "Fingerprints of God," "With Hope" and the title track.
And fans who haven't caught the nostalgia-packed show yet still have another chance.
Chapman has confirmed that the Speechless 25th Anniversary Tour will head out for its final run this fall, giving audiences one last opportunity to hear him revisit the album live - difficult guitar parts and all.
After 25 years, it turns out some songs don't just bring back memories. They also make you wonder, "How did I play that again?"
