After more than two decades of waiting, Anita Baker may finally be ready to give fans something they have been begging for: new music.
The eight-time Grammy winner has suddenly resurfaced with a tantalizing one-minute preview titled "Forever," accompanied by an incredibly cryptic message:
"Forever... is coming."
And that's it.
No release date. No album announcement. No explanation of whether Forever is a single, an album or something completely different. Classic Anita Baker-just enough information to send longtime fans into a frenzy while keeping everyone guessing.
The teaser is particularly huge because Baker hasn't released an album of original material since 2004's My Everything. Her holiday collection, Christmas Fantasy, followed in 2005, meaning an entire generation has grown up without a proper new Anita Baker studio project.
And the brief taste of "Forever" suggests Baker isn't trying to chase whatever happens to be fashionable in 2026. Early descriptions of the clip point toward the sophisticated, slow-burning R&B sound that made songs such as "Sweet Love," "Caught Up in the Rapture," "Giving You the Best That I Got" and "Body and Soul" classics.
But longtime fans might understandably be keeping the champagne on ice.
This isn't the first time Baker has suggested that new music was coming.
Back in 2022, she indicated that fresh material would arrive in January 2023, around the time she was preparing for a major North American tour. That promised musical return never developed into the full-scale comeback album many fans hoped for.
There was also an earlier attempted comeback. In 2012, Baker released her version of Tyrese's "Lately" and discussed a planned album called Only Forever. Intriguingly, more than a decade later, the word "Forever" has suddenly appeared again in her latest tease. Whether there's any actual connection between those projects remains unknown, but longtime Anita watchers will certainly notice the coincidence.
The timing also makes this latest tease particularly interesting.
Over the past several years, some of Baker's biggest headlines haven't exactly been about new records. Her 2023 tour became embroiled in controversy after Babyface was dropped from the remaining dates following online hostility and disputes surrounding their shows. Baker has also made headlines for confronting concertgoers over phones and cameras and for firing back at critics and rumors online.
Now, suddenly, the conversation is back where fans probably want it: that unmistakable voice.
At this point, Baker hasn't confirmed an album, tracklist, label, collaborators or even when "Forever" will actually arrive. All we really have is approximately a minute of music and three tantalizing words.
But after waiting more than 20 years, Anita Baker fans know a thing or two about patience.
The Queen of Quiet Storm appears to be stirring again.
The only question is whether "Forever" finally means the wait is almost over.
