As Netflix's new docuseries "Death of the Pastor's Wife" reignites public attention on the 2024 death of Mica Miller, those closest to her want one thing remembered above all: her faith.
"Out of all of us, she was the most strong in her faith," Mica's sister, Destinee Barrientos, shared in the three-part series, which premiered August 26. "Mica knew her calling: 'I'm going to be in the ministry and I'm going to help people.'"
Mica, a worship leader at Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, was known in her community for a voice and a devotion that made her, in her family's words, someone who put her calling before nearly everything else - including, they now say, her own safety.
That devotion is part of what makes her story resonate beyond true-crime circles. Friends and family featured in the documentary describe a young woman who believed deeply in the church she served, even as her marriage to the church's pastor, John-Paul Miller, grew increasingly strained. Miller has since been indicted on federal cyberstalking charges and is awaiting an October 2026 trial; he has pleaded not guilty.
Mica's death was ruled a suicide. Her family continues to grieve, and to ask what more could have been done to help her.
Her story is a painful reminder that faith and vulnerability can coexist - and that churches, at every level, carry a responsibility to protect the people who serve within them, especially those who may be suffering in silence.
