Hayden Panettiere Autopsy Reveals New Clue—But Mystery Surrounding Her Death Deepens

Hayden Panettiere's autopsy has provided one significant answer-but the central mystery surrounding the actress's sudden death remains unresolved.

The Greenville County Coroner's Office confirmed that examiners discovered "no signs of trauma" that would have contributed to the 36-year-old star's death. Her cause and manner of death, however, remain pending while investigators await additional studies, expected to include toxicology testing.

The emergency unfolded shortly before 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 16. According to the coroner's statement, first responders arrived at a Greenville, South Carolina, residence and found the Nashville and Heroes actress in cardiac arrest. Paramedics immediately began advanced life-support measures, but their attempts to revive her were unsuccessful. Panettiere was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m.

Although emergency dispatch communications reportedly referenced a possible overdose, officials have not confirmed that an overdose caused Panettiere's death. A description given during a 911 response is not the same as a medical determination, and investigators have stressed that the case remains active.

The absence of trauma appears to rule out injuries as a contributing factor, but it does not explain what triggered the fatal cardiac arrest. That answer may depend upon the outstanding laboratory results-and those findings could take several weeks to complete.

Panettiere had previously spoken candidly about her struggles with alcohol and opioid addiction, but authorities have not officially connected that history to her death. Until the coroner releases a final determination, reports claiming to know precisely what killed the actress remain speculation.

Best known for playing indestructible cheerleader Claire Bennet on Heroes and troubled country star Juliette Barnes on Nashville, Panettiere leaves behind her daughter, Kaya. Her death marks another devastating loss for the family following the 2023 passing of her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, at just 28.

For now, the autopsy has eliminated one possibility while leaving the biggest question unanswered: what caused Hayden Panettiere's heart to stop?
