Billy Joel, 77, is offering fans an encouraging update on his health more than a year after revealing his diagnosis with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a condition that affects balance, memory and the ability to perform.

Speaking on his own channel on SiriusXM, Joel confirmed he underwent surgery to have a shunt implanted in his brain - a procedure he initially resisted before deciding to move forward. He said the results were better than expected, with noticeable gains in his memory, balance and everyday functioning.

NPH occurs when cerebrospinal fluid builds up inside the skull and presses on the brain, causing symptoms that can resemble dementia, though the condition is often treatable through shunt surgery, according to medical experts.

Joel first canceled all of his scheduled concerts in May 2025 after doctors determined that the loud volume of his live shows was aggravating his condition, at times leaving him with symptoms similar to a concussion. He continues physical therapy as part of his recovery and says doctors have advised him to scale back future performances to protect his health.

Despite the setback, Joel wanted to reassure his fans directly: "I'm not going anywhere, I'm still here."

The Piano Man singer, known for decades of hits, has remained largely private about the day-to-day realities of his condition since his diagnosis became public. This update marked one of his most detailed accounts yet of what the surgery involved and how it has changed his daily life.
