ESPN's "Monday Night Football" enters its 2026-27 season with a reworked version of its signature opening anthem, adding Grammy-winning rapper Ludacris to the mix alongside returning voices Chris Stapleton and drummer Cindy Blackman Santana.
The trio's cover of Phil Collins' 1981 classic "In the Air Tonight" has opened MNF broadcasts since 2023, when Stapleton and Blackman Santana first teamed up with Snoop Dogg for the original mashup. Ludacris steps into that rotating third spot, delivering a new verse - "Monday night magic, closing out the weekend, Luda on the mic, it's football season!" - that ESPN says will update week to week throughout the season.
"The second you hear that song, you know something big is coming," Ludacris said. "Teaming up with Chris and Cindy to bring a new energy to Monday Night Football was a lot of fun, and I can't wait for fans to experience it."
The refreshed anthem debuted for Week 1's matchup between the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs, part of a broader new partnership between ESPN and Apple Music for the 2026 season.
Stapleton's own vocal, delivering Collins' famous "I can feel it in the air tonight, oh Lord" hook, carries an unmistakable gospel weight - a nod to the country star's roots singing in church as a kid, long before those harmonies found their way to Monday nights in front of millions.
