Hillsong Founding Pastor Brian Houston Is Talking About Money Again—But His New Message Comes With A Warning

Former Hillsong Church global senior pastor Brian Houston has returned to one of Christianity's most debated subjects-money-but his latest message insists that cash should be treated as a servant rather than a spiritual master.

Houston delivered the provocatively titled sermon "You Can Change a Dollar's Life" on JesusFollowers.TV, the online ministry platform he shares with his wife, Bobbie Houston. The message tackles spending, generosity, financial ambition and the danger of allowing wealth to become the foundation of a believer's identity.

"What if money isn't the problem, but what happens to it in our hands?" the ministry asked while introducing the sermon.

According to Houston, money takes on the character of the person controlling it. A dollar can be wasted, hoarded, fought over or used to manipulate others. In different hands, however, that same dollar can feed someone, support ministry, fund a vision or become what Houston described as a "Kingdom asset."

The subject is certain to attract attention because Houston's decades at the helm of Hillsong made him one of the most recognizable-and frequently scrutinized-figures in global Pentecostal Christianity. Discussions about money, celebrity pastors and church finances have long generated heated reactions, making his return to the topic especially noteworthy.

Yet Houston's central argument is not that Christians should chase prosperity. Drawing upon passages including 1 Timothy 6:10, Matthew 6:24-27 and Matthew 16:26, he warns viewers against loving, serving, worshiping or placing their security in money. Wealth, he argues, must remain a tool entrusted to believers for responsible use.

Houston also addresses viewers on both sides of the financial divide. Whether someone is enjoying abundance or struggling through a season of scarcity, he encourages Christians to work diligently, manage what they possess and place God ahead of financial anxiety.

Bobbie Houston opened the broadcast with prayer and a reading from Psalm 5, reminding viewers to put God at the beginning and end of each day. Brian then summarized the couple's message with a memorable declaration: "You never come second by putting God first."

The broadcast includes links allowing viewers to support JesusFollowers.TV and join its ministry community. That detail may invite skeptical responses, given the sermon's financial theme, but Houston's stated point remains clear: money should never become the object of Christian devotion.
