A former American Idol contestant's murder trial took a sharp turn Wednesday when the woman with whom he had an affair testified about his alleged statements concerning his wife. Alleigha Botner told jurors that Caleb Flynn repeatedly said he hated Ashley Flynn and wanted her dead. She also acknowledged that she initially lied to investigators about their relationship.
Flynn is accused of killing Ashley in their Tipp City, Ohio, home in February and staging the scene to look like a burglary. He has pleaded not guilty. The prosecution says his messages to Botner help establish a motive; the defense argues that an affair and disturbing words do not prove he committed murder.
According to NewsNation's account of her testimony, Botner said Flynn pursued her after they met through the same church. She testified that he did not wear a wedding ring when they first became involved and that she learned later he was married. Their relationship continued for more than a year, during which, she said, he repeatedly promised to leave Ashley.
Botner alleged that Flynn told her he wished Ashley were dead and said he would kill her if he could avoid arrest. In one exchange read in court, Botner said she asked what she could do to help after he complained about his wife. His alleged reply was: "You can kill her." The jury must decide what weight to give those statements and whether other evidence connects Flynn to Ashley's death.
The timing of their last conversations may prove especially consequential. Botner testified that she and Flynn resumed contact on Valentine's Day, two days before Ashley was killed. She said he told her he planned to leave his wife and had considered how to tell their daughters and Ashley's parents. When Botner learned of Ashley's death through a message from a fellow church member, she said the coincidence troubled her: it was the day she believed Flynn intended to leave.
Her credibility is also under scrutiny. Botner admitted she was initially untruthful with FBI investigators because she feared the affair would damage her reputation and cost her job. She further testified that she used ChatGPT to research how to permanently delete messages between her and Flynn. When asked how she felt about Flynn now, Botner testified that she hated him because she believed he murdered Ashley. That is her belief, not a verdict. The question for jurors is whether her account, the messages and the physical evidence prove the prosecution's case beyond a reasonable doubt. Flynn's defense has argued that investigators focused on him after discovering the affair and that evidence of betrayal cannot establish who killed Ashley.
