Meryl Streep will voice Aslan in Greta Gerwig's Narnia: The Magician's Nephew, and the casting has opened a debate that reaches beyond whether the Oscar-winning actor can deliver a memorable performance. Aslan is one of C. S. Lewis's most beloved characters. For many readers, his voice is bound up with the meaning of the story itself.
Gerwig told Empire that she sought a performer with gravitas, emotional depth, joy and a sense of wonder. Streep's range makes the choice understandable on those terms. Yet Movieguide has called the casting a "major mistake", reflecting the unease some viewers feel about changing the voice of a character Lewis depicts as a male lion.
That concern deserves a more careful hearing than a quick dismissal as resistance to change. The Magician's Nephew tells the story of Narnia's creation, with Aslan's song central to the moment the world comes to life. His voice will help establish the film's sense of wonder and authority from the beginning. The question is whether Streep's performance will draw viewers further into Lewis's character or make them more conscious of Gerwig's reinterpretation.
There is also a fair case for waiting to hear her. A casting announcement tells audiences who has the role; it cannot show how Streep will sound as Aslan, how the lion will appear on screen, or how the performance will work within the film. Gerwig has explained the qualities she wanted, but viewers have yet to see whether those qualities preserve the character they recognize in Lewis's books.
For Netflix, the debate shows how closely audiences are watching this adaptation. Its announced theatrical release is February 12, 2027, followed by a Netflix debut on April 2. By then, the argument will have a performance to answer it. Until then, the most probing question is also the simplest: when Aslan sings Narnia into being, will audiences hear the lion they came to meet?
