ABC News correspondent Will Reeve, who reports for "Good Morning America," says he is cancer-free after a months-long battle with testicular cancer. He shared the diagnosis publicly on Tuesday.
The 34-year-old is the son of the late "Superman" actor Christopher Reeve.
What happened?
Reeve said he noticed a lump in April, and his wife, Amanda, whom he married in January, encouraged him to see a doctor. Surgery in early May to remove the testicle led to a diagnosis of embryonal carcinoma, an aggressive form typically found in young to middle-aged people. Further testing showed the cancer had spread to lymph nodes in his abdomen, and he had a six-hour surgery in June to remove them.
What was the treatment?
Because some of the removed lymph nodes were cancerous, Reeve chose two rounds of chemotherapy, which he said lowered the chance of the cancer returning to nearly 1%. He began treatment in early July at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, with his wife beside him. He rang the bell there at the end of July to mark the end of treatment. A checkup on Sept. 8 showed he is cancer-free.
Why is he speaking out now?
Reeve said it can be awkward to talk about, but he wants people to know it can happen and that most people end up okay. He said watching his parents turn hardship into something hopeful shaped his decision to share his story.
