Christian Author Whitney Capps Close To Death As Husband Says “We Thought We Had Longer”

Christian author and Bible teacher Whitney Capps is unresponsive and may be approaching the final hours or days of her life, according to a heartbreaking update shared by her husband, Chad. Writing through her social media account, he said the sudden change had surprised the family, who believed they would have more time together.

"My sweet wife Whitney has suddenly begun her transition to Eternity today," Chad wrote. He said she was resting well and that the family had been told she was most likely hours to days away from death. His announcement asked supporters to pray for a peaceful transition, while expressing the family's continuing trust in God.

The update follows a yearslong cancer journey. Capps was diagnosed with stage 4 small bowel cancer in 2021, and in a September 4 devotional for Proverbs 31 Ministries, she identified August of that year as the month she received the diagnosis. Five years later, she explained, acknowledging the disease remained emotionally difficult, even as she continued teaching about faith and suffering.

An earlier September post on Ann Voskamp's website helps explain why the latest announcement has come as such a painful surprise. Introducing a guest contribution by Capps, Voskamp reported that Whitney had recently shared that doctors could offer no further medical treatment and had estimated she had three to six months remaining, unless a miracle changed her circumstances. Chad's new update indicates that the family is now facing a far shorter timetable than they had anticipated.

Throughout her illness, Capps has spoken candidly about the physical and spiritual cost of cancer. In her contribution to Voskamp's website, she described living with Crohn's disease, undergoing chemotherapy, and enduring severe side effects. Rather than presenting suffering as easy to accept, she explored how faith could sustain her when her circumstances remained painful and uncertain.

Her teaching has continued to reach readers and listeners during this difficult season. Lifeway Women released an episode of its Marked podcast featuring Capps on September 28, in which she discussed receiving help during cancer treatment. The episode description highlights the meals, rides, prayers, and practical care offered by fellow Christians, alongside the challenge of accepting support and releasing control. The release date does not establish when the conversation was recorded.

Capps is known for her work with Proverbs 31 Ministries, her books and Bible studies Sick of Me, We Over Me, and The Melody of Grace, and her role as a cofounder of Simple Seminary. She also cohosts Theology and Other Fun Stuff. Whitney and Chad have four sons-Cooper, Dylan, Ryder, and Tate-and live near Atlanta.

For now, Chad's announcement is a request for prayer during an end-of-life vigil, rather than confirmation that Whitney has died. He has not disclosed what specifically caused the sudden deterioration, and the family's stated priority is her comfort and a peaceful transition.
