Stray Kids have joined BTS in sitting out the 2027 Grammys, and the Recording Academy says its new Best Asian Pop Music Performance category will go ahead anyway. Their label, JYP Entertainment, confirmed on Oct. 2 only that the group "did not submit for the Grammys."
Why are BTS and Stray Kids skipping the Grammys?
The Academy announced the category in June to recognize Asian pop music from, or widely recognized in, Asian markets. In July, BTS said they hope their music can be heard and loved for itself rather than divided by region or language. Critics fear the category could box in genres like K-pop and J-pop. JYP gave no reason for Stray Kids, but the news came hours after the Academy confirmed the category would proceed.
What did the Recording Academy say?
CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said the category was created to celebrate the growth of pop artistry from Asia and "never to divide." He also acknowledged the decision will not satisfy everyone.
Who can be nominated?
Songs must make meaningful use of at least one Asian language. That is why Blackpink's all-English EP Deadline does not qualify, though the group is not part of the boycott. Billboard names possible contenders, including Kenshi Yonezu's "Iris Out" and SB19's "Visa."
Stray Kids recently landed their ninth US No. 1 album and have never been nominated for a Grammy. In February, "Golden" from KPop Demon Hunters became the first K-pop song to win a Grammy.
Music has always crossed languages and borders, and fans around the world are watching how the Grammys respond.
