James Gunn Is 'Already' Writing His Next Film: What We Know About "Man of Tomorrow"

Spoiler note: this mentions the Lanterns Season 1 finale.

James Gunn is already working on his next film while Superman: Man of Tomorrow is still in the editing room. When a fan asked on Threads if he was ready to write his next film, Gunn said he was "already in it" and joked he had to do something while waiting for the assembly. He also confirmed that the assembly cut of Man of Tomorrow is complete.

What is Gunn writing? He hasn't said. He has not shared a title, subject matter, or whether it is a film or a series within the DC Universe.

When does Man of Tomorrow come out? July 9, 2027, in theaters. Filming wrapped on August 26 after about 93 days of shooting. The sequel to 2025's Superman pairs David Corenswet's Man of Steel with Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor in an uneasy alliance against Brainiac. Gunn has described it as as much a Lex movie as a Superman movie.

Is John Stewart in it? Yes. The October 4 Lanterns finale set up how John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, becomes Earth's sole Green Lantern, and Pierre returns for Man of Tomorrow. In the finale, John refuses a young man's plea to kill him, a choice of mercy that shapes the character's path. HBO has not yet renewed Lanterns for a second season.

What else is coming from DC? The horror film Clayface opens October 23. ComicBook.com reports that Skydance owner David Ellison signed off on a 10-year DCU plan from Gunn and Peter Safran.

Superman's story of hope, kindness, and protecting the vulnerable has long resonated with faith-minded audiences, and John Stewart's choice of mercy in the finale echoes the same themes.
