Riley Green discovered the difficult side of coaching on The Voice when his first Battle Round forced him to choose between a powerful solo singer and a polished sister duo. With Carly Pearce helping prepare the contestants, the country star had plenty of talent onstage-but only one act could remain on his team.
The October 6 episode moved directly from the final Blind Auditions into a showdown between Brandy Neelly and sisters Ferryn and Brinkley. Their assignment was Miranda Lambert's "Mama's Broken Heart," a song that called for vocal strength, personality and plenty of attitude. Green brought Pearce in as his guest mentor to help shape the performance.
Neelly also had an unexpected personal connection with her coach. During her audition, she revealed that Green's team had previously hired her to bake his birthday cake through her Nashville baking business. Green playfully offered to return the favor if she joined his team, adding a memorable twist to his recruitment pitch.
That exchange resurfaced after the battle, when Green acknowledged the sisters' experience singing together before joking that Neelly's cake gave her an advantage, too. The humor briefly softened a decision he clearly disliked making. "It's gonna be painful for me either way," he admitted.
Green ultimately selected Ferryn and Brinkley, ending Neelly's run on the show. His explanation focused on the sisters' close harmonies, their individual ability and the distinctive opportunity they offered as the competition's only duo. He believed those qualities could help them survive the next stage and become serious contenders.
TVLine's review favored the sisters while also praising Neelly's strong vocals and spirited delivery. Its assessment highlighted how closely the duo's voices and movements worked together, giving Green a compelling alternative to the solo performer he had recently welcomed onto his team.
The decision sends Ferryn and Brinkley toward the season's new Cut Week, where the pressure will intensify. According to Parade, each coach will send two artists directly to the Live Shows, while five others compete for one remaining team spot. Advancing from this battle therefore gives the sisters another opportunity, with a substantial elimination still ahead.
For Green, the first battle exposed the tension built into his new television role: he must encourage artists, help improve their performances and then send some of them home. The birthday-cake joke made the moment lighter, but his final choice showed how quickly a friendly coaching relationship can become a difficult professional judgment.
