Ben Affleck's new crime thriller Animals is generating a sharp divide between streaming attention and critical approval. MovieWeb reports that the film reached No. 1 worldwide on Netflix within two days of its October 9 debut, while Rotten Tomatoes currently lists a 36% critics' score from 53 reviews. The combination puts Affleck's latest project at the center of a familiar Hollywood question: can a heavily watched movie become a success story when reviewers remain unconvinced?

Affleck directs, co-writes, and stars as Mark Kimball, a Los Angeles mayoral candidate whose carefully managed public image begins unraveling after an apparent kidnapping. Kerry Washington plays his wife, Abigail, who joins him in a desperate effort to raise a ransom while confronting secrets that threaten their marriage and political future. Netflix released the film in select theaters and on its streaming service on October 9.

The story's central dilemma becomes more disturbing when the couple discovers that the abducted child is not their son. That revelation shifts the stakes from protecting their own family to deciding what they owe another vulnerable child-and how much they are willing to sacrifice when their personal interests are no longer straightforward. The twist gives the thriller a moral complication beyond its initial race against the clock.

For Affleck, the film examines what happens when respectable appearances collide with private calculations. Speaking to Netflix's Tudum, he described the story as an exploration of whether people possess a moral compass or simply pursue what benefits them. He also emphasized marriage as a central concern, with the kidnapping crisis forcing Mark and Abigail to confront the bargains underpinning their relationship.

The supporting cast includes Gillian Anderson, Steven Yeun, Adriana Paz, and Luis Gerardo Méndez. Anderson plays a mysterious fixer named Dayle, while the production reunites Affleck and Matt Damon behind the scenes through Artists Equity. Damon is among the producers, and the screenplay credits include Affleck, Connor O. McIntyre, and Billy Ray.

Yet the star power has not translated into broad approval. Alongside its 36% Tomatometer rating, Rotten Tomatoes currently shows a 41% audience score from more than 250 ratings. Those figures complicate the idea that viewers and critics are taking opposite sides: attracting viewers is different from winning their endorsement, and a high chart position alone cannot establish audience satisfaction.

MovieWeb frames the reported chart performance as another Netflix victory for Affleck following The Rip. Whether Animals sustains that momentum will make the comeback conversation more revealing. For now, its provocative premise, recognizable ensemble, and bruising reviews offer viewers several reasons to watch-and plenty to argue about afterward.
