'Qualcomm' Smartphone Technology Latest News: Qualcomm Robot Technology Revealed

Last Thursday, September 18, Qualcomm Inc. had its annual developer conference. During the event, the executives of the company revealed their latest project: robots that have been developed with the use of smartphone technology, as reported by Reuters and Got News Wire.

As Reuters pointed out, Qualcomm, together with other mobile device and handset manufacturers, are striving hard to catch the attention, not only of consumers, but also of investors. They want them to know that their companies are coming up with more innovative technologies.

It was also reported that, while Qualcomm Inc. raised the topic of how the 4G LTE (plus other new technologies) and 3D cameras are progressing, the highlight of the event was the set of robots featuring the smartphone technology developed by the company itself.

Here's a video where you could sneak a peek of this robot:

Steve Mollenkopf, Qualcomm Inc. Chief Executive, presented a robot sporting three wheels during the event. The device showed off its abilities which include being able to pick up small items such as toys, building blocks, and stuffed animals. This may not be new to some people but there is one more thing the device was able to perform: sorting out the items it picked up based on the shape they had.

Aside from this presentation, several engineers from the company also demonstrated the "learning" ability of the robots that Qualcomm Inc. has designed and developed. The show involved a foot-tall robot sporting wheels, camera sensors, and glowing ears. The company's engineers trained the robots to  "come and go" using simple hand gestures, reported Reuters and Got News Wire.

Raj Talluri, Qualcomm's Senior Vice President, explained that, "The concept that a processor can enable a product to learn a behavior and change behavior based on learning is powerful." He continued, "Now imagine your phone ... You buy a phone and it learns your behavior and in time the phone starts getting better and better and more and more personal."

It is also worthy to note that Qualcomm has not discussed the problem it is currently facing: the antitrust investigation that China has set on it nearly a year ago.

This is a serious concern for the company since it wants to be aggressive in selling its products to the Chinese market. As Stacy Rasgon, a Bernstein Analyst, pointed out, "The big elephant in the room is China. Who cares about anything else right now?"
