Miss America Latest Controversy: Miss America Admitted 'Hazing' Sorority Pledges
The newly crowned Miss America, Kira Kazantsev, is now dealing with one controversy after another. First, it was revealed that Kazantsev spent three months as an intern at Planned Parenthood. Others see this in another way, "So the woman representing the nation as the new Miss America interned for the very organization that has killed millions of Americans in abortions." Planned Parenthood stand with Kira on this matter - defending her. Sam Haskell, CEO of the Miss America Organization released a statement saying that the internship gave Kira a chance to "advocate against child abuse while writing her thesis."
Kazantsev landed in another controversy when it was reported that she was kicked out of her sorority house for "abusive hazing." In an interview with Good Morning America last Tuesday, Kazantsev said, "Under the broad definition of hazing, yes, I was involved. At the time, unfortunately, that was just the culture of the university, and I was hazed, and I was kind of brought up through the organization thinking that is appropriate behavior."
She explained that everything started in an email and that email was taken out of context and was forwarded to others. Miss America said that in the email, she wrote "that we would make the evening scary for the pledges."
According to reports, the pledges were criticized because of their physical appearance and were asked to perform difficult physical task, up to the point of exhaustion.
Miss America Organization said that Kira has been transparent about her sorority days and are fully aware of her "termination from the Alpha Phi sorority." A spokesperson told FOX411 that "It's unfortunate that this incident has been exploited to create a storyline that distracts from what we should be focusing on: Kira's impressive academic achievements at Hofstra University, including earning a triple major from the Honors College and her commitment to serving her community. Kira is an exceptional ambassador for the Miss America Organization, and we are excited to be a part of her journey as a force for good across our nation, promoting education and service and working to empower young women."
