Candi Staton Celebrates Her 84th Birthday with "Power of One"
Soul music legend, Candi Staton, is quite busy this spring. The 4X Grammy® Award nominated singer of classic songs such as "Young Hearts Run Free," "Nights on Broadway," and "You Got the Love," celebrated her 84th birthday last week (March 13th), and was given the key to the city of Atlanta, Georgia by Councilman Michael Julian Bond, son of the late civil rights activist, Julian Bond.
That's not all the big news though. London, England's Glitterbox Recordings has released, "Power of One," a soulful new groove that blends the dancefloor with the church aisle. The new track pairs Staton with veteran club DJ Kelly G. (Mary J. Blige, Beyoncé, Gladys Knight) who built a ferociously powerful, pulsating groove around Staton's vocals. It's a poignantly universal message of peace in a divisive world. The spiritual overtones are punctuated by James Dees' fiery organ fills. It's been No. 1 on Traxsource, the club music industry's leading digital music platform, for a week. It's Staton' first new club cut since 2012's gold-selling "Hallelujah Anyway" remixes. On March 24th, TV One will premiere an "UnSung" episode about Staton's roller-coaster life on and off stage. The episode will feature interviews with Staton and her musical peers Mavis Staples, Melba Moore, Freda Payne, music director Ray Chew, RollingStone Magazine reporter Jonathan Bernstein, FAME Records executive Rodney Hall, radio executive Tori Bailey, and Michael Paoletta, former dance editor for Billboard Magazine, among others.
Staton has also written a book entitled, Beyond the Shadow of a Doubt, about divine miracles that she's experienced throughout her life. It's available on Amazon.com and on her website: www.candi-staton.com.
Staton is also finishing work on her first Americana gospel album, Back to My Roots, which is expected in the fall. The project features new compositions alongside unique covers of songs popularized by The Rolling Stones, Al Green, Lari White, and Elvis Presley.
