Members of Joey + Rory Feek's Hometown Give Joey a Christmas Video Greeting

Joey Feek

A hundred or so fans of Joey + Rory gathered at Alexandria First Baptist Church on Monday (Dec. 21) to record a Christmas video greeting for Joey Feek.  Holding battery-operated candles, according to Rushville Republican, they came to sing "Silent Night" together.

"This doesn't happen everywhere. It's a small-town thing," said Mike Owens, a member of the church who played the piano and organized the 20-minute taping.

The event was ochestrated by Mike Owens.  And it is one of several ways  that locals have shown their support for Joey Feek over the past couple of months. The Grammy-nominated country singer, one half of Joey + Rory, returned to her hometown in October to live out her final days with hospice care.

Joey Feek, one half of country music duo Joey + Feek, is in the last stages of fighting her cervical cancer.  After one round of chemo and radiation therapy, the cancer has returned and spread.  The Feeks have decided not to seek anymore treatment and they have come home to live.  But the couple are not giving up.  Come Valentine's Day, they are releasing Hymns that Are Important to Us. a rendering of their favorite hymns.

Owens, who admitted the event actually was the idea of one of Martin's friends, said it grew out of a candlelight prayer vigil on Nov. 5.

"That candlelight vigil really was for everyone fighting cancer. This time, it's specifically for (Joey)," he said.

Like many of her fans, those in attendance expressed the hope for a miracle for Martin and her family.

"There's power in prayer," said the Rev. Michael Deutsch, pastor of the church, as he welcomed those in attendance and led an opening prayer. "Never discount the power of Christ and what he can do."

Georgia and Jerry Bassett, who also are members of First Baptist Church, brought four extra battery-operated candles to share with others. The Bassetts said they don't know Martin personally, but they recalled seeing her perform in the "Sound of Music" in Elwood. "We've been following her since she was in high school," Georgia Bassett said.
