As the remote community of Tumbler Ridge continues its healing process after the mass shooting on February 10, details about those killed and wounded have begun to emerge. The tragedy - which unfolded at a local residence and Tumbler Ridge Secondary School - claimed the lives of people from across the community and has left countless families grieving and a nation shocked.

Remembering the Lives Lost

Officials and families have confirmed the identities of several of the victims who were killed in the attack. Those who died at the school are being remembered for their energy, promise and the joy they brought to those around them:

  • Abel Mwansa Jr., 12 - A student known for his curiosity and love of school. His father described his son's enthusiasm for learning and dreams of making a difference in the world.

  • Eziekiel Schofield, 13 - A young hockey player and beloved grandson, fondly remembered by family for his vibrant spirit and presence on and off the rink.

  • Kylie May Smith, 12 - Described by her family as "beautiful, kind and innocent," Kylie's aunt has shared that the sudden loss has devastated relatives struggling to find words to express their grief.

  • Zoey Benoit, 12 - A young student whose family has highlighted her vibrant personality and the impact she had on friends and classmates.

  • Ticaria Lampert, 12 - A child mourned by her community for her bright smile and future potential.

  • Shannda Aviugana-Durand, 39 - An educator at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School whose dedication to her students and passion for teaching deeply affected the school community.

In addition to those killed at the school, two victims - the 39-year-old mother and 11-year-old stepbrother of the suspected shooter - were found dead at a nearby residence before the attack at the school.

Suspect's Identity and Background

Police have officially identified the suspect as 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar of Tumbler Ridge, who died at the school from an apparent self-inflicted wound after the shootings.

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Van Rootselaar acted alone. Police noted that Van Rootselaar had past interactions with authorities related to mental health concerns, including multiple calls to the family home in prior years.

Van Rootselaar once attended the school but had dropped out several years before the attack, police said. Previous police responses to the family residence involved mental health assessments, and firearms were reportedly seized in an earlier visit before being returned after a lawful appeal.

Authorities have not released a clear motive for the attack and have said it would be premature to speculate. Officials emphasize that investigations remain ongoing to better understand the circumstances that led to the violence.

Survivors and Wounded

While some students and staff were able to escape, approximately 27 others were wounded, including several children. Among the most seriously injured is a 12-year-old girl who was shot while attempting to help lock library doors to protect classmates, and remains in critical condition in hospital.
Many families have shared stories of resilience and courage from those who survived, even as they cope with trauma and loss.

Community Response

The Tumbler Ridge community - a town of fewer than 3,000 residents - has rallied together in sorrow and support. Vigils, fundraisers and memorial gatherings have been held to honour the memory of the victims and to assist affected families with medical, travel and memorial costs. Support services, including trauma counselling and crisis response teams, continue to be made available to students, faculty, and residents.

National Condolences

Canadian leaders have expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy. Prime Minister Mark Carney described the loss of young lives and community members as "unimaginable," emphasizing that the nation stands with Tumbler Ridge as it grieves and begins healing.

Ongoing Investigation and Support

Law enforcement continues a thorough investigation into the events of February 10, while authorities work with families to confirm further victim identities and honour their memories respectfully. Any support needed by the community is being coordinated through local health services and the Tumbler Ridge Community Centre
