Suspect's Identity and Background
Police have officially identified the suspect as 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar of Tumbler Ridge, who died at the school from an apparent self-inflicted wound after the shootings.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Van Rootselaar acted alone. Police noted that Van Rootselaar had past interactions with authorities related to mental health concerns, including multiple calls to the family home in prior years.
Van Rootselaar once attended the school but had dropped out several years before the attack, police said. Previous police responses to the family residence involved mental health assessments, and firearms were reportedly seized in an earlier visit before being returned after a lawful appeal.
