Grammy-nominated Christian artist Crystal Lewis is speaking publicly following reports that the new faith-based film I Can Only Imagine 2 portrays the origins of the song "Even If" without acknowledging her foundational songwriting role.
According to a recent report by The Roys Report, Lewis says she originally wrote the song in 2012 under the title "My God Is Able," during a deeply personal season marked by grief and spiritual wrestling. She states that she later invited worship leader Tim Timmons into a collaborative writing process, after which the song evolved and was eventually released as "Even If."
While Lewis affirms that co-writing often results in shared credit, she says she was surprised to discover that I Can Only Imagine 2 dramatizes the song's creation as primarily the story of Timmons, omitting her presence in the narrative portrayal.
"It's important to me that the history of the song is accurately represented," Lewis shared. "I'm not interested in tearing anyone down. But telling the truth about where something begins matters."
Lewis clarified that she does not harbor personal ill will toward those involved with the film. Having spent four decades in the Christian music industry, she described the situation as reflective of longstanding systemic patterns rather than an isolated misunderstanding.
"This isn't about revenge or bitterness," she explained. "It's about learning to advocate for yourself after years of staying quiet."
The conversation surrounding "Even If" has sparked broader discussion in Christian music circles about authorship, representation, and the visibility of women's creative contributions in collaborative projects.
Lewis' advocacy aligns with the message behind her children's book Claire Clementine Finds Her Voice, a project inspired by her own journey toward self-expression and empowerment.
"I hope women - especially those who were raised to stay small or silent - see that their voices matter," Lewis said. "Growth takes time. But we can do hard things."
I Can Only Imagine 2, a sequel to the 2018 box office success, continues exploring stories connected to contemporary Christian music. The film features actor Milo Ventimiglia and centers on the creation and impact of the song "Even If."
