President Donald Trump has removed Kristi Noem from her role as U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, nominating Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma to lead the department instead.
The announcement came Thursday following growing criticism over Noem's leadership of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), including controversy surrounding government spending, immigration enforcement operations, and internal management disputes.
Trump made the announcement on social media, thanking Noem for her service while confirming she would transition to a new role as "Special Envoy for the Shield of the Americas," a security initiative focused on strengthening cooperation across the Western Hemisphere.
Scrutiny Over Spending and Leadership
One of the biggest controversies during Noem's tenure involved a $220 million advertising campaign launched by the Department of Homeland Security. The ads encouraged undocumented immigrants to voluntarily leave the United States, but the campaign drew criticism because it prominently featured Noem herself.
During congressional hearings this week, lawmakers from both parties questioned whether the campaign was an appropriate use of government funds. Noem testified that the initiative had been approved in advance, though Trump later told Reuters that he had not personally signed off on the advertisements.
The spending controversy added to growing concerns among lawmakers about management practices within the department.
Questions Surrounding Adviser Corey Lewandowski
Another issue drawing attention involved Corey Lewandowski, a longtime Trump ally who served as a senior adviser to Noem.
Reports in recent months highlighted tension inside DHS and raised questions about Lewandowski's influence in departmental decisions. Congressional investigators also examined his role as a special government employee and reviewed financial disclosure requirements related to his position.
While neither Noem nor Lewandowski confirmed allegations circulating online about the nature of their relationship, the controversy added to broader scrutiny surrounding the department's leadership.
Immigration Enforcement Controversy
Noem also faced criticism for her handling of immigration enforcement operations, particularly after the shooting deaths of two protesters in Minneapolis earlier this year during a confrontation with immigration officers.
In the aftermath of the incident, Noem described the individuals as "domestic terrorists," a claim that contradicted video footage and eyewitness accounts. The remarks became a central issue during two days of congressional testimony, where lawmakers pressed her to clarify the statement.
The incident intensified debate over the administration's immigration crackdown and the tactics used during enforcement operations in several major U.S. cities.
Trump Nominates Markwayne Mullin
Following Noem's dismissal, Trump nominated Sen. Markwayne Mullin to become the next Secretary of Homeland Security.
Speaking with reporters at the U.S. Capitol, Mullin said his priority would be ensuring the department remains focused on national security.
"I'm going to get DHS focused on protecting the homeland," Mullin said.
If confirmed by the Senate, Mullin would take charge of the third-largest department in the federal government, responsible for border security, immigration enforcement, disaster response through FEMA, and counterterrorism operations.
Leadership and Accountability
Leadership changes in government often raise broader questions about accountability and the responsibilities that come with public service. Many faith traditions emphasize the importance of integrity and stewardship when entrusted with positions of authority-values that continue to shape discussions about leadership in both politics and society.
For now, attention will turn to the Senate confirmation process and whether Mullin's leadership will signal a new direction for the Department of Homeland Security.
