Crossroads Church has announced the results of an independent third-party investigation into historical conduct and leadership practices, confirming allegations of inappropriate behavior involving senior pastor Brian Tome.
Following the findings, church leadership has placed Tome on a one-month suspension, which will be followed by a four-month extended leave of absence.
The investigation, commissioned by the church's spiritual board in response to a reported incident from approximately a decade ago, substantiated claims that Tome engaged in what leaders described as "inappropriate physical humor." The review included corroboration from an additional third-party witness, reinforcing the credibility of the original report.
"While we cannot share all details out of respect for those involved, the investigation has confirmed the substance of the concern raised," the board said in an official statement. "Though the actions may have been intended humorously, they were inappropriate and not above reproach."
The incident in question involved the use of a riding crop during an interaction with a church member, an act that leadership now acknowledges crossed appropriate boundaries for pastoral conduct. The church emphasized that the decision to pursue an external investigation reflects its commitment to accountability and transparency.
In addition to the confirmed incident, the board noted that further concerns regarding Tome's leadership approach surfaced during the review process. While specifics were not disclosed, leadership indicated that these concerns contributed to the decision to extend Tome's leave beyond the initial suspension.

Founded in Cincinnati, Crossroads Church has grown into one of the largest churches in the United States, reporting an estimated weekly attendance of more than 34,000 across multiple campuses. During Tome's absence, Crossroads Church will continue its ministry operations under the guidance of its leadership team and board. No interim successor has been formally announced, but leaders affirmed that structures are in place to ensure continuity in teaching, pastoral care, and organizational oversight.
