Crossroads Music is mourning the passing of its co-founder and longtime leader Mickey Gamble, whose vision, integrity, and passion helped shape one of the most influential independent music companies in Southern Gospel and bluegrass.
With deep sadness, the company announced that Gamble-widely respected across the industry for his leadership and unwavering commitment to artists-has died, leaving behind a legacy that spans decades of musical excellence and innovation.
Under Gamble's direction, Crossroads Music and its family of labels-including Horizon Records, Sonlite Records, Mountain Home Music Company, and Organic Records-grew from humble beginnings in Asheville, North Carolina into a powerhouse within the genre. What began as a recording operation known as Hear Here! Studios and a Southern Gospel imprint evolved into a diverse and respected catalog representing both traditional and contemporary expressions of faith-based and roots music.
Gamble's leadership was marked not only by business success, but by a deeply personal investment in the artists he worked with. His approach to music was rooted in relationships, authenticity, and a belief that every artist carried a unique voice worth cultivating. Whether working with traditional gospel quartets, emerging bluegrass acts, or innovative crossover artists, Gamble fostered an environment where creativity and integrity could flourish.
He was known throughout the industry for his professionalism and principled approach to business. Colleagues consistently point to his insistence on honesty, fairness, and adaptability in an ever-changing music landscape. At the same time, Gamble maintained an infectious enthusiasm for the music itself-remaining deeply engaged with both the creative and practical sides of the industry.
His daughter, Francesca Dooris, shared a heartfelt reflection on her father's life and legacy:
"My dad loved music-and its makers-more than anyone else I've ever encountered. He was a champion of the arts, not just music, but all forms of creative expression because of the people behind them. He saw something unique in every individual and encouraged them to trust that part of themselves. The music community was truly family to him, and he loved each person in a completely one-of-a-kind way."
She added that if her father could leave one message, it would be simple but powerful: "The music must go on. Keep writing. Keep creating. Keep being you."
Throughout his career, Gamble's contributions were recognized at the highest levels of the industry. He received the Southern Gospel Music Guild Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014, followed by the Distinguished Achievement Award from the International Bluegrass Music Association in 2019-honors that reflect both his influence and enduring impact.
Beyond awards and accolades, however, Gamble's true legacy lies in the countless artists he mentored, the music he helped bring to life, and the community he built. His work positioned Crossroads as more than just a label group-it became a home for artists committed to meaningful, authentic expression.
As the Crossroads family and the broader music community grieve his loss, the company has pledged to continue the mission Gamble began-supporting artists, championing excellence, and preserving the values that defined his leadership.
