Two Weeks After the Eclipse Over Spain, a 96% "Blood Moon" Is Coming to America: Here's When and Where to See It

Two weeks after a total solar eclipse swept across northern Spain for the first time since 1905, the sky has another show planned - this time for viewers across the Americas, Europe, and Africa.

A deep partial lunar eclipse, popularly called a "blood moon," will occur overnight on August 27 into August 28, 2026. At its peak, Earth's shadow will cover roughly 96% of the Moon's surface - just short of a full total eclipse, but close enough that the Moon is expected to glow copper, orange, or deep red for hours.

Here's when and where to catch it:

When: Overnight, August 27-28, 2026. Maximum eclipse hits at 12:12 a.m. EDT on August 28 - that's 11:12 p.m. CDT, 10:12 p.m. MDT, and 9:12 p.m. PDT on August 27. The full event, including its partial phases, lasts more than five hours.

Where:

  • Best view: North and South America - the Moon will be high in the sky for the entire event
  • Visible, but lower in the sky: Europe and Africa, catching the eclipse near moonset in the early morning hours
  • Not visible: Most of Asia and the Pacific, where the Moon will be below the horizon during the eclipse window

What you'll need: Nothing. Unlike the solar eclipse over Spain, which required special glasses, this lunar eclipse is completely safe to view with the naked eye.

Astronomers note this will be the most striking lunar eclipse visible anywhere on Earth until New Year's Eve 2028, making it a rare back-to-back moment with this month's solar eclipse.

Scripture repeatedly points to the sky as a marker of God's design - "let them be for signs and for seasons" (Genesis 1:14) - and two eclipses in one month offer a rare, literal reminder that creation still runs on a schedule far older than any of us.
