Leon Thomas is closing out May with two major wins - and the biggest one hasn't even happened yet.

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers announced that the three-time Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, and producer will receive the ASCAP Vanguard Award, which recognizes members whose work is helping shape the future of music. Thomas will be honored June 25 at ASCAP's private, invitation-only celebration of top hip-hop, R&B, and gospel songwriters in Los Angeles.

The announcement comes just days after Thomas was named Breakthrough R&B Artist at the 52nd American Music Awards, held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Monday, May 25.

ASCAP EVP and head of creative membership Nicole George-Middleton said in a statement: "Leon Thomas is one of R&B's most creative forces today and is reshaping its sound with his boundary-breaking artistry. His passion, creativity and undeniable talent have established him as a defining voice of this generation."

Previous Vanguard Award recipients include Victoria Monét, Migos, Janelle Monáe, and Beastie Boys.

The path here was anything but overnight. Thomas first emerged as a child performer on Broadway in The Lion King before becoming widely known for his role on Nickelodeon's Victorious. After the show ended, he spent years in the background - writing and producing for others - before stepping into his own spotlight with his album Mutt. The title track climbed to No. 1 on Billboard's Radio Songs chart, earned double-platinum certification, and helped him win two Grammys: Best R&B Album and Best Traditional R&B Performance for "Vibes Don't Lie."

Thomas recently released his EP PHOLKS and is currently touring select markets with Bruno Mars on The Romantic Tour.

For anyone watching his journey, the timing feels right. Years of faithful work - writing for others, sharpening the craft, trusting the process - and now, in 2026, the music industry is finally saying his name out loud. The ASCAP ceremony takes place June 25 in Los Angeles.
