Two of the most anticipated concerts in Europe this summer won't be happening - and the reason goes beyond logistics.
Italian authorities officially cancelled back-to-back shows by Kanye West and Travis Scott, both scheduled for July at the 103,000-seat RCF Arena in Reggio Emilia. The local prefect, Salvatore Angieri, ordered the cancellation because of concerns over public order and security, including the potential for protests.
The decision came after a formal request from two key groups: consumer group Codacons and the Jewish community of Modena and Reggio Emilia, who raised objections ahead of the Pulse of Gaia Festival.
West has faced a growing wave of cancelled European dates this summer following past statements in which he glorified Adolf Hitler, before later apologizing and denying he was a Nazi or antisemite. France and Poland had already scrapped previously announced shows for similar reasons.
Travis Scott, meanwhile, has faced scrutiny over concert safety since the 2021 crowd crush at Astroworld in Houston, which killed 10 people and injured hundreds. Scott had been set to perform on July 17, with West scheduled the following day.
That holds human dignity and the safety of every life as sacred, the response from Italian authorities - and the Jewish community that spoke up - is a reminder that words carry weight, and accountability matters.
