Hillsong's Founder Bobbie Houston Calls Christians to Transform Outrage Into Prayerful Action

Hillsong's founding pastor Bobbie Houston is encouraging believers to respond to the tensions of today's world not with bitterness or rage, but with spiritual maturity, prayer, and godly action.

In a recent message on JesusFollowers.TV titled "The Tension of Outrage & Outcry," Houston explored the difference between ungodly outrage and righteous outcry, drawing from Psalm 144 to challenge Christians to become agents of peace and hope amid growing social, political, and cultural unrest.

Speaking to viewers around the world, Houston acknowledged that modern society is filled with conflict, division, and competing voices. Yet she argued that followers of Christ are called to respond differently.

"Godly peace is not produced by the absence of conflict, but by the presence of maturity amid conflict," Houston said.

Throughout the message, Houston reflected on personal experiences that transformed feelings of outrage into compassionate action. She recalled visiting an orphanage in Uganda and being deeply moved by the plight of abandoned children. Rather than allowing outrage to lead to despair, she said the experience motivated her to raise awareness and support for vulnerable children.

Houston also shared how learning about the suffering of women and girls in developing nations sparked initiatives that would eventually influence Hillsong Sisterhood's global humanitarian efforts.

According to Houston, outrage alone is insufficient. Genuine change occurs when believers allow their concerns to become prayerful intercession and practical action.

"Wishing doesn't change the world," she said. "But Holy Spirit-inspired awareness, response, and action actually does."

Central to Houston's message was the conviction that Christians must avoid becoming consumed by the very darkness they seek to confront. She warned against the rise of what she described as "outrage culture," arguing that unchecked anger often leads to division, resentment, and destruction.

Instead, Houston called believers to embrace spiritual maturity, which she described as learning to carry grief without bitterness, confront evil without hatred, and speak truth without weaponizing it.

"Maturity is learning how to remain tender without becoming weak," she said. "It's learning how to pray for steadiness so that we become stabilizers of society rather than contributing to its fragmentation."

Drawing on Psalm 144, Houston highlighted three key themes: personal righteousness, generational responsibility, and the pursuit of peace-filled communities. She emphasized the importance of raising future generations with wisdom, faith, and moral conviction in an increasingly turbulent world.

"One generation shall praise your works to another," Houston noted, pointing to the biblical mandate for believers to pass their faith and values to those who follow.

As she concluded her message, Houston urged Christians not to ignore injustice or become indifferent to the suffering around them. Rather, she encouraged believers to allow righteous concern to drive them toward prayer, compassion, and constructive engagement.

"Outrage is needed," Houston said. "But without God, it becomes dangerous and treacherous. Outcry invites the presence of God, the power of God, and the intervention of God."

Through the message, Houston challenged viewers to become people of prayer who bring hope, wisdom, and stability into a fractured world, demonstrating Christ's love while standing firmly for truth.
