On the evening of June 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Taylor Swift did something nobody in that room was expecting - and it turned out to be one of the most genuinely joyful moments in recent entertainment memory.
Swift opened Disney and Pixar's post-screening celebration with a solo piano performance of her original track "I Knew It, I Knew You," which appears on the Toy Story 5 soundtrack - receiving a warm ovation from the crowd. But the night was just getting started.
Between songs, Swift told the crowd: "It means the world to me to be a small part of the universe of these films. Toy Story 5 is my favorite of all the Toy Stories. I'm so lucky that I get to be a part of this."
Then she turned her attention to someone she called the architect of everything.
"He is the king of making us feel the absolute most - pulling at our heartstrings, making us laugh, making us feel like he's one of our friends," Swift told the audience. "I'm talking about Randy Newman."
A screen lifted to reveal Newman seated at a piano, easing into the familiar opening notes of "You've Got a Friend in Me." As he settled into the melody, Swift stepped in midway through - joining him to trade lines and harmonize on the beloved franchise theme. When Swift sang the line "Some other folks might be a little bit smarter than I am," Newman interjected with a smile: "No one's smarter than you!"
The crowd was undone.
Earlier in the evening, Swift had posed on the red carpet alongside Tom Hanks, Joan Cusack, and other members of the Toy Story voice cast. She took the stage in a floor-length gown to perform her piano rendition of "I Knew It, I Knew You" - the wistful track she wrote and produced alongside Jack Antonoff, written from the perspective of beloved cowgirl Jessie.
For a franchise built on the enduring power of friendship, loyalty, and showing up for the people you love, it is hard to imagine a more fitting premiere night moment. Two artists - separated by generations, united by a love for storytelling - sharing one song and meaning every word of it.
Toy Story 5 opens in theaters June 19. "I Knew It, I Knew You" is streaming now on all major platforms.
