More than 20 years after leaving Neverland Ranch and over 15 years after Michael Jackson's death, the King of Pop's famous chimpanzee companion Bubbles is still alive and thriving at the age of 43.
Once one of the most recognizable animals in the world, Bubbles spent years by Jackson's side during the height of the superstar's global fame. From private jets and world tours to celebrity gatherings and television appearances, the chimp became an unlikely celebrity in his own right, often appearing alongside Jackson in photos that captivated fans around the world.
Jackson adopted Bubbles in 1983 after rescuing him from a biomedical research facility in Texas. The chimp initially lived with the singer in Los Angeles before later moving to Neverland Ranch, where he became a beloved part of Jackson's inner circle.
As Bubbles grew larger and stronger with age, however, caring for him became increasingly difficult. Chimpanzees can possess several times the strength of an adult human, and concerns reportedly arose about his compatibility with Jackson's young children. In 2003, Bubbles was relocated to the care of animal trainer Bob Dunn before eventually settling permanently at the Center for Great Apes in Wauchula, Florida, in 2005.
Today, Bubbles enjoys a dramatically different lifestyle from the one he experienced during his years in the spotlight.
According to sanctuary staff, he lives among a close-knit family of chimpanzees that includes a female named Oopsie, her daughter Boma, and younger chimps Kodua and Stryker. Caregivers say Bubbles naturally embraced a nurturing role within the group and has become known for his calm temperament and patience with younger members of the chimpanzee family.
Far removed from the flashing cameras and celebrity attention of his past, his days now revolve around simpler pleasures. Staff members say he enjoys relaxing in hammocks, resting in shaded areas, exploring enrichment activities, and flipping through magazines-particularly issues of National Geographic.
There is still one connection to his former life that occasionally resurfaces.
The sanctuary has revealed that Michael Jackson's music is sometimes played while staff clean and work around the chimpanzee habitats. As a result, Bubbles still occasionally hears songs from the man with whom he spent some of the most famous years of his life.
For many fans, Bubbles remains one of the most memorable symbols of Jackson's unique and often unconventional lifestyle. During the 1980s and 1990s, photos of the pair traveling together became iconic, helping cement Bubbles' place in pop culture history.
Now, decades later, the former celebrity chimp is spending his senior years in peace, surrounded by companions, attentive caregivers, and a stable environment designed specifically for great apes.
While Michael Jackson's legacy continues to be celebrated through music, films, and documentaries, Bubbles serves as a living reminder of one of the most unusual friendships in entertainment history-a bond that captivated the world and remains part of pop culture lore to this day.
