Whitney Houston's estate is pushing back after Oprah Winfrey's recent comments at the Cannes Lions festival reignited speculation surrounding one of the late superstar's most memorable television appearances.
In a strongly worded statement, the estate rejected claims that Houston was under the influence during her 2009 appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, insisting the singer's fall happened during a soundcheck-not during the televised interview-and had nothing to do with drugs.
"Whitney absolutely fell off stage, but it was during a sound check and it was due to the darkness of the area and her unfamiliarity with the stage. She was absolutely not high," the statement said.
The estate's response comes after several media outlets revisited Oprah's remarks from Cannes, fueling renewed discussion about Houston's appearance at a pivotal moment in her comeback.
While acknowledging that the six-time Grammy winner faced well-documented personal struggles, the estate argued that those struggles should not be used to explain every moment of her career.
"Like many people, she faced personal battles, but it is inaccurate and unfair to attach that struggle to every performance or every chapter of her life," the statement continued.
Instead, the estate said the audience witnessed what had defined Houston throughout her legendary career: professionalism, discipline, and extraordinary talent.
"What the studio audience witnessed on stage was the result of discipline, talent, and commitment-not the assumptions others project."
Though celebrated worldwide as one of pop music's greatest voices, Houston's musical roots were firmly planted in the church. Raised singing gospel under the guidance of her mother, Cissy Houston, Whitney never lost that influence, recording beloved faith-filled songs throughout her career, including "I Love the Lord" from The Preacher's Wife, a performance that remains one of the most celebrated gospel recordings by a mainstream artist.
The estate concluded by urging fans and the media to remember Houston with honesty rather than speculation.
"Whitney's humanity included triumphs and struggles, but on that day, she showed up as the professional and gifted artist she always worked to be. We owe her the dignity of telling the truth-not repeating myths."
More than a decade after her passing, Houston's life continues to inspire conversation. Her estate's latest statement serves as a reminder that while her struggles are part of her story, so too are her unmatched artistry, enduring faith, and the legacy of one of music's greatest voices.
