Three decades after releasing one of the most influential albums of her career, Rebecca St. James is looking back with gratitude.

The Grammy and Dove Award-winning artist recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of her third studio album, God, reflecting on the lasting impact the 1996 project has had on her faith, music, and ministry.

"Thirty years ago this month, I released an album called God," St. James shared on social media. "It changed every aspect of my life and I'm so thankful for the joy it was to make and the journey it took me on!"

Reflecting on the songwriting process, she added, "When I write songs, I write about what God is teaching me... what I'm learning. When I think of those songs, the lyrics still challenge me to this day because of the Scripture in them. His Word never returns void."

Released on June 25, 1996, through ForeFront Records, God became a defining moment in St. James' career. Produced by Tedd Tjornhom, the album showcased her distinctive blend of Christian pop, rock, and worship while launching a creative partnership that would continue for years.

The record featured ten tracks:

  • God
  • You're the Voice (John Farnham cover)
  • You Then Me
  • Speak to Me
  • Abba (Father)
  • Me Without You
  • That's What Matters
  • Carry Me High
  • A Cold Heart Turns
  • Go and Sin No More (featuring the hidden track "Psalm 139")

Several of these songs became staples of Christian radio. The title track topped multiple Christian rock charts in 1996, while "Abba (Father)," "Go and Sin No More," "Speak to Me," and "Carry Me High" also enjoyed successful radio runs. Fan favorites such as "Psalm 139" and "You Then Me" have continued to resonate with listeners long after the album's release.

Commercially, God reached No. 6 on Billboard's Christian Albums chart, climbed to No. 10 on the Heatseekers Albums chart, and entered the Billboard 200. The album was later certified Gold by the RIAA in 2005, underscoring its lasting impact on Christian music.

For many fans, God remains one of Rebecca St. James' signature recordings-a collection of songs rooted in Scripture, personal testimony, and wholehearted worship. Thirty years after its release, the album continues to encourage listeners with the same message that inspired its creation: God's Word endures, and His faithfulness never fails.
