Prince Harry and Meghan Markle: California Neighbors Barely Notice as Couple Heads Back to Britain

Published: Aug 22, 2026 02:13 PM EDT

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are preparing to leave California and return to the United Kingdom with their two children, Archie and Lilibet, after nearly six years building a life in Montecito. The New York Times reported the decision, confirmed by two people familiar with the family's plans, and noted King Charles III was informed of the move over the weekend.

The exit closes a chapter that once looked like a fresh start. When the couple stepped back from royal duties in 2020, they settled among Montecito neighbors like Oprah Winfrey and Gwyneth Paltrow and signed a reported $100 million deal with Netflix. But recent projects, including their Archewell-produced Wedding Date rom-com, have struggled to find the audience their early ventures drew. The BBC reported that California's reaction to the news has been muted, with the couple reportedly still searching for "a brand that sticks" after years of shifting business ventures.

The couple will remain non-working royals and private individuals once resettled in Britain, according to the Times. No date has been confirmed for the move.
