The 78th Primetime Emmy Award nominations were announced Wednesday, July 8, with HBO Max's medical drama "The Pitt" leading all series with 25 nods, including Outstanding Drama Series and a nomination for star Noah Wyle. The comedy "Hacks" followed with a record 24 nominations in its final season - the most any comedy has ever received in a single year - while Apple TV's "Widow's Bay" (19 nods) and "Pluribus" (18 nods) rounded out the season's biggest breakouts.

Beyond the award tallies, "The Pitt" has drawn attention from faith and religion writers for its recurring, unforced treatment of prayer inside the chaos of the ER. In one widely discussed scene, Wyle's character, Dr. Robby, recites the Hebrew Shema prayer alone after a mass-casualty shift, later explaining to a colleague that he learned it from his grandmother. Faith outlets including Good Faith Media and Broadview have pointed to the moment - and the show's habit of letting Muslim, Catholic, Jewish, and skeptical characters each get a genuine turn - as rare for a modern medical drama.

The Emmys air live Monday, September 14, on NBC and Peacock, hosted by Mariska Hargitay, shifting from the usual Sunday slot to avoid an NFL conflict. Here's the full list of nominees in the major categories:
