Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy left the team's training camp Monday after his wife was hospitalized following a shooting at the family's home in Ashburn, Virginia.
The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to the couple's home Sunday night after receiving a report of a shooting, where they found a woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. ESPN identified the woman as 57-year-old Mia Bieniemy, Eric's wife.
Authorities arrested and charged the couple's 27-year-old son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, in connection with the shooting. He faces charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling, and is being held without bond. The sheriff's office said the investigation remains ongoing and that there is no continuing threat to the public.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed the situation at Monday's practice, telling reporters that Mia was in stable condition and that the team was standing behind Eric during a difficult time. He described her warmly, calling her one of God's blessings, and said the family would lean on their support system while working through what happened.
A neighbor told local station NBC4 Washington that the Bieniemys had always come across as a close, faith-centered family, adding that Eric and Mia had appeared to be doing well the weekend before the shooting.
The Chiefs said in a statement that they were aware of the situation and would respect the family's privacy. Eric Bieniemy's return to the team has no set timetable.
