Kelly Ripa was absent from Monday's episode of "Live with Kelly and Mark" as she recovers from a gum graft surgery that has left her temporarily unable to speak.
Her husband and co-host, Mark Consuelos, filled viewers in on her absence alongside guest co-host Kevin Jonas, explaining that Ripa had put off the procedure for years before finally scheduling it. He said her dentist had recommended it roughly five years ago, and joked that at the time, Ripa hadn't expected to still be hosting the show by now.
Consuelos noted that despite Ripa's famously high pain tolerance, this recovery has been rough. He said the procedure, which involves moving tissue to cover exposed tooth roots caused by gum recession, has left her on total vocal rest, along with restrictions on straws and solid foods.
Despite the discomfort, Consuelos assured fans that Ripa is doing well and expected to return to the show within the week. A representative for "Live" confirmed the same timeline to press.
Ripa, 55, has spoken in past interviews about her Catholic upbringing and the role her faith plays in her family life, describing it as a steady source of strength through the years.
Fans wishing her a smooth recovery can expect her back at the desk soon.
