Cheryl "Salt" James, one-third of the legendary group Salt-N-Pepa, has released the music video for "Overcomers," a new single featuring Grammy-winning gospel singer Erica Campbell. The video, filmed largely in and around a church, shows the two performing together, walking a stairway, and gathering with other women over a shared meal - visuals a press release describes as "a celebration of women who have done the work, know their worth, and have the elegance to show for it."
"Overcomers" is the fourth release in James's ongoing solo rollout, following "Chosen," "Kings & Queens," and "Diamond in the Light," ahead of her forthcoming debut solo album "Salty N Lit." James, who has spoken openly in the past about her Christian faith reshaping her outlook after decades in the music industry, described the song on Bandcamp as "an anthem for my seasoned Queens" - a tribute to women who've carried struggle, faith, and self-worth into a new season of life. Pairing with Campbell, best known for her work with Mary Mary and her solo gospel ministry, gives the project its clearest gospel statement yet.
The release doesn't mark a step away from Salt-N-Pepa. James is set to hit the road again with Pepa, alongside TLC and En Vogue, for the "It's Iconic" tour starting August 15.
For an artist whose career has spanned four decades of chart-topping hip-hop, "Overcomers" is a reminder that faith and legacy aren't in competition - sometimes the fullest expression of an artist's story is the one that finally makes room for both.
