Lauren Chandler is celebrating more than 27 years of marriage to Pastor Matt Chandler-and both spouses are sharing heartfelt reflections on a relationship they say has been refined through joy, hardship, and faith.
In a touching anniversary post, Lauren looked back on the couple's dating years, recalling five-hour road trips soundtracked by George Strait, handwritten letters, late-night conversations about Jesus, and prayers that they would become each other's "forever person."
That prayer, she said, was answered-but not without difficulty.
"The first seven years of marriage were our toughest," Lauren admitted, describing those early years as "a crucible" that exposed "deep-seated lies about God, ourselves, and each other" before ultimately strengthening their relationship.
Now, after more than 27 years of marriage, Lauren says they are enjoying a level of intimacy that only comes from two "very imperfect people who are all in on Jesus together."
Matt Chandler responded with an equally emotional tribute of his own, revealing that the couple has actually been together for 29 years, including 27 years in covenant marriage.
"Neither of us had any idea what life would look like or where Jesus would take us," he wrote. "It has been more beautiful and more brutal than our young selves could have comprehended."
Reflecting on nearly three decades together, Matt praised his wife's unwavering character, adding, "The Spirit has doubled the beauty and divided the pain and through it all your love, dignity, patience and depth have been used to hold us and our little family together!"
The anniversary celebration comes after several challenging years for the Chandlers, whose marriage has remained under public scrutiny because of controversies surrounding Matt Chandler's leadership at The Village Church.
In 2022, Matt stepped away from ministry after church elders determined he had engaged in what they described as an "unguarded and unwise" pattern of Instagram direct messages with a woman who was not his wife. Church leaders said the conversations were inappropriate for a pastor, though Matt insisted they were neither romantic nor sexual. Following a leave of absence that church elders described as both disciplinary and developmental, he returned to preaching later that year.
The pastor had also faced criticism over The Village Church's handling of abuse-related matters, including controversy surrounding church discipline involving Karen Hinkley and broader allegations that church leadership failed to adequately support a family after reports of child sexual abuse. While Matt later apologized directly to Hinkley, and she publicly accepted his apology, the church continued to face criticism over its handling of abuse allegations. A lawsuit connected to one abuse case was eventually settled in 2022.
Long before those ministry controversies, the Chandler family endured an even more personal trial. In 2009, Matt suffered a seizure and was diagnosed with an anaplastic oligodendroglioma, a malignant brain tumor. After treatment, he later shared that he believed God had healed him, and he received a clean bill of health in 2010.
Despite the public storms that have surrounded their family, the Chandlers' anniversary messages focused on gratitude, endurance, and the faith they say has sustained them through nearly three decades together-celebrating a marriage they acknowledge has been both "more beautiful and more brutal" than they ever imagined.
