Grinspoon frontman Phil Jamieson has canceled the remainder of his Australian solo tour after fracturing his back in an onstage accident - an injury that struck just days before the release of his new album.
Jamieson, 49, was performing at The Deck in Traralgon, Victoria, on August 7 when he slipped on stage and struck his spine on a drum riser. "I was unable to continue with the gig and got an ambulance to Latrobe Hospital," he wrote on Instagram. Tests confirmed he had fractured his L1 vertebra, and he was prescribed bed rest for what he called "a long road to recovery." His "PJ Air Tour," which had been running since June and was booked through September across eight Australian states and territories, has now been called off entirely, along with the launch party for his upcoming solo album, 10Charlie.
Despite the setback, Jamieson confirmed the album itself will still release as planned on August 14. "While we won't be launch partying together anymore... if you feel like wrapping your earholes around it, I would be grateful," he told fans, adding thanks to the paramedics and hospital staff who treated him.
Jamieson's music career began in a Christian household. His father, Will Jamieson, fronted a Christian rock band called Good Grief, while his mother played keyboards in the group's support act; the pair spent years touring Baptist beach missions along Australia's east coast before the family settled in a Christian community in Bourke, New South Wales.
Jamieson went on to found the alternative rock band Grinspoon in 1995, leading the group to multiple ARIA Awards over a three-decade career, and has released solo music since 2022.
Fans have flooded his social media with well-wishes as he begins recovery.
