For years, Joel Osteen's Lakewood Church has been synonymous with packed crowds, booming worship and thousands of people filling one of the biggest church auditoriums in America.
But new footage is raising an uncomfortable question: Where did everybody go?
Video reportedly filmed during Lakewood's 8:30 a.m. Sunday service on August 9 appears to show huge sections of the Houston megachurch sitting empty, with some critics estimating that as many as three-quarters of the sanctuary's seats were unoccupied.
The images are particularly striking considering Lakewood worships in the former home of the NBA's Houston Rockets, an enormous arena capable of seating roughly 16,000-17,000 people.
Protestia, a longtime and highly vocal critic of Osteen and his ministry, has seized on the footage as further evidence that Lakewood's in-person congregation has been shrinking.
And this isn't the first time empty seats have attracted attention.
Back in 2022, Protestia reported that Lakewood's attendance had dropped significantly compared with its pre-pandemic crowds, pointing to increasingly sparse upper sections of the massive sanctuary.
Historically, the numbers surrounding Lakewood have been staggering. In 2016, the church was reported to attract around 52,000 people each weekend, making it America's largest megachurch at the time.
More recent estimates are lower, although Lakewood remains enormous by virtually any definition. Outreach magazine's 2025 listing gives the church an average attendance of approximately 45,000, while TBN currently describes Joel and Victoria Osteen as leading a congregation averaging more than 40,000 people weekly.
So is Lakewood really dying?
Not so fast.
There are several major caveats to the viral footage.
For starters, the video reportedly captures Lakewood's 8:30 a.m. service. The church also holds an 11 a.m. Sunday service, meaning one sparsely attended early-morning gathering cannot tell us how many people attended Lakewood across the entire weekend.
It was also an August service, when summer travel and vacations can affect church attendance.
And despite the dramatic images, there does not appear to be independently verified attendance data showing that Lakewood has suddenly lost 75 percent of its congregation. An estimate based on empty seats in one video is very different from audited weekly attendance figures.
Still, it's hard to ignore the contrast.
The Lakewood of Osteen's peak years became famous for images of an arena seemingly bursting at the seams. Even if reports of the church's demise are greatly exaggerated, footage showing thousands of empty seats inevitably raises questions about whether America's megachurch landscape is changing - and whether the crowds that once made Osteen the undisputed king of the megachurch are becoming harder to maintain.
Lakewood certainly isn't a small church.
But judging by those empty seats, it may no longer be quite the unstoppable attendance machine it once appeared to be.
