Dolly Parton, 80, Misses Another Major Event As Health Issues Continue — But She Insists She’s Getting Better

Dolly Parton was noticeably missing from one of Dollywood's biggest celebrations of the year, and considering the country legend's recent health struggles, fans understandably wanted to know why.

The 80-year-old icon had been expected at Dollywood on Friday, Aug. 14, for the opening of the park's massive new NightFlight Expedition attraction. Instead, Dollywood President Eugene Naughton introduced Parton through a prerecorded video from Nashville.

And Dolly wasted no time addressing the elephant in the room.

"Well, hey Eugene. I'm right here. Well, kind of. Sort of," she joked before explaining why her doctor had stopped her from making the trip.

Parton revealed that she has continued experiencing dehydration and dizziness, saying her Nashville physician advised her not to travel while she was dehydrated. She also acknowledged that medication can sometimes leave her feeling "swimmy-headed."

That's the bad news.

The considerably better news? Dolly says her medical situation is improving.

Dolly Insists She's Not Disappearing

Despite missing the Dollywood celebration, Parton reassured fans that her recovery is moving in the right direction. She remains busy with several projects, including the forthcoming SongTeller Hotel, the Life of Many Colors Museum and her Broadway musical, Dolly: A True Original Musical.

So anyone interpreting another canceled appearance as a sign that Dolly is quietly retiring may want to reconsider.

She has repeatedly maintained that she intends to keep working - even if her body is currently forcing her to do things differently.

Her absence nevertheless attracted attention because this isn't the first major commitment her health has disrupted.

Her Health Problems Have Been Going On For Months

Parton's medical difficulties became public in late 2025 when she revealed that a kidney stone had caused an infection. She subsequently required medical procedures and postponed her planned Las Vegas residency.

The shows were eventually rescheduled for September 2026, but in May, Parton announced that the residency was being canceled altogether because her treatment was preventing her from rehearsing and preparing at the level she believed audiences deserved.

More recently, Parton has indicated that her immune and digestive systems have been weakened and require continued treatment.

That history inevitably made Friday's no-show more concerning than an ordinary celebrity cancellation.

Still, Parton has made some public appearances during her recovery. She appeared at Dollywood's 41st-season celebration in March and attended a ribbon-cutting event in Tennessee in June.

Dolly Has Also Been Dealing With Enormous Personal Loss

There is another dimension to Parton's difficult year.

Her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, died in March 2025 at 82. Parton later acknowledged the emotional toll of losing the intensely private man who had been beside her for most of her adult life.

She has continued working through that grief while simultaneously dealing with her own medical problems.

That combination makes her determination to remain involved in her projects all the more striking.

She Missed A $50 Million Dollywood Milestone

And this wasn't exactly a minor ribbon-cutting.

NightFlight Expedition reportedly represents a $50 million investment and combines elements of a coaster and whitewater-style attraction, making it a significant addition to the Tennessee theme park bearing Parton's name.

For someone so closely associated with Dollywood, missing the grand opening was significant.

But Dolly being Dolly, she managed to turn an uncomfortable health update into something reassuring rather than alarming.

She made clear that she wanted to be there, explained that her doctor had put the brakes on the trip, and emphasized that she intends to return when she's able.

So, yes, Dolly Parton is still dealing with health problems, and the fact that they have now interfered with both her Las Vegas residency and another important Dollywood appearance shouldn't be dismissed.

But the message coming directly from Dolly is equally important: she says she's improving, she's still working, and she isn't finished yet.

After months of speculation surrounding her health, perhaps that's exactly what her fans needed to hear.
