Vin Diesel has finally given fans a concrete answer after years of delays: the eleventh and final mainline "Fast & Furious" film, "Fast Forever," begins shooting in December.
"We start shooting in December, if I can make good on the request from the studio," Diesel told Variety Monday night at the 25th anniversary screening of "The Fast and the Furious." "I'm in a good place, though. I had to go through four sets of writers, four years of development, to get to something that I felt would be worthy of a finale."
Diesel then shared something more personal. He revealed that when he read the finished script a couple of weeks earlier, it brought him to tears. Addressing the audience before the screening began, he elaborated: "It was after four different writers, four years of development, and after I read the script, halfway through, one tear. By the end of the script that we crafted and worked so hard to make right for you after four years, I was crying."
"Fast Forever" is set to hit theaters March 17, 2028, closing out a franchise that has become Universal's longest-running and most profitable, with a combined worldwide gross of $7.3 billion. Director Louis Leterrier, who helmed "Fast X," remains attached to the finale, though as of last week he had not yet read the new script himself.
Faith has quietly run through the "Fast & Furious" saga since the beginning - from Dom Toretto's crucifix and pre-meal blessings to castmate Tyrese Gibson's own public testimony about his walk with God carrying him through hard seasons in his life. As the franchise heads into its final chapter, that thread of family, gratitude, and something bigger than the cars has remained part of what's kept fans coming back for 25 years.
With a December start date now on the calendar, the "Fast" family's long-awaited send-off finally has a road map - even if, as Diesel himself admits, it still comes with an "if."
